Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites have attracted significant interests from both academia and industry since the late 20th century because additions of a small amount of nanoparticles, typically less than 10 wt.%, may offer substantial enhancements on the properties of polymer matrices whilst also introducing new functionality. In this talk, some of my recent research in the field will be introduced. In particular, the mechanisms underlying the concurrent improvements of stiffness and toughness by the incorporation of appropriate layer-structured nanoparticles into polymer matrices will be described, which may help design advanced polymer nanocomposites for structural engineering applications. Different types of smart and multifunctional polymer nanocomposites will also be reviewed, and their potential applications in medical devices, sensors, stretchable electronics, etc, will be demonstrated.
